From as far back as I can remember, capturing the mesmerizing Aurora Borealis has always been a dream of mine. Growing up in California, then moving to Colorado and Oklahoma, I never imagined I would have the chance to witness this breathtaking phenomenon. But then I found myself in Montana, where discussions about the Aurora are a staple of the local weather forecast. As a novice in astrophotography, I quickly learned that what my eyes could perceive was often vastly different from what my camera could capture. I can't count the number of times I returned home feeling disheartened, believing I had missed the Aurora when it was likely right before me all along. However, on that magical night in May 2024, I was armed with a bit more knowledge. Seeking to escape the town's light pollution, I ventured over an hour north, driving down a remote dirt road in the middle of nowhere. What initially appeared to be mere clouds in the sky transformed into a vibrant display of color on my camera's LCD screen. I spent hours entranced by the shifting hues, witnessing phenomena I never thought possible. Bursting with excitement from this incredible experience, I packed up my gear and began the journey home. For the next thirty minutes, I replayed the evening's events in my mind, a gift from God, when suddenly my mom, riding shotgun, exclaimed "STOP!" Through the glare of the dashboard lights reflecting in the passenger window, she spotted the sky igniting with reds and greens. I slammed on the brakes, pulled over, and quickly set up my equipment. The next hour unfolded into a breathtaking spectacle that far surpassed what I had witnessed just hours earlier. Colors exploded in every direction, showering down upon us, making it feel as if we could reach out and touch them. In that moment, we stood in awe, at times giggling like children, completely captivated by the beauty surrounding us. Time seemed to stand still. The featured photo captures a moment from that unforgettable night. Remarkably, the Aurora graced all 50 states that evening. I still search for the right words to describe this experience, but they continue to elude me. It was a night with my mom that I will cherish forever. Now, I proudly call myself an Aurora junkie, eagerly monitoring apps, weather forecasts, and local social media for tips on the next celestial display. Each new experience feels just as exhilarating as the first.
